A Condenser microphone is a microphone that is capable of capturing much quieter sounds with a high degree of accuracy.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CONDENSER MICROPHONES

  1. Condenser microphones cannot be used on very loud sources because
they often have lower maximum sound pressure levels.
  2. Condenser microphones are best used to capture vocals and high frequencies.
  3. Condensers need Phantom Power to work. This means that to get your condenser mic working, you need  power supply which is easily accessible via an audio interface.
  4. Condenser microphones are more fragile than their dynamic counterpart, and so need to be handled with care.
  5. Because of their detailed sound and accuracy, Condensers are the most preferred type of microphone for use in the  studio.
  6. Most Condenser microphones are not suited to live situations because of their high level of sensitivity.
  7. Because of their sensitivity, Condenser microphones are more suited to softer and brighter sounds.
  8. Condenser microphones have a versatile polar pattern, and can change their patterns via a switch from unidirectional to bidirectional and to omni-directional.
  9. Condensers are more expensive than their dynamic counterpart, though they have gotten much, more cheaper than they used to be.
  10. They produce clearer, sweeter and more balanced sounds, and are good studio mics.
  11. There are two different types of condenser microphones, which are the
Large Diaphragm Condenser and the Small Diaphragm Condenser.
  12. The Large Diaphragm Condenser microphones pick up more lows and low mids frequencies, but a little less of the highs.
  13. The Small Diaphragm Condenser  pick up less lows and low mids, but add a lot to the top end.
